Boys vs Girls Boxtop Contest Starts in January
Hey, cut that out again! We did outstanding with our Fall Contest ($2090 from Box Tops and 6385 Campbell's Labels) so keep an eye out for them and keep cutting this winter. Do you think we can beat it?
From January 3rd until February 17th we will be having our annual “Boys vs. Girls” school-wide contest. Each teacher will have a collection folder for boys and girls. The winner will have their t-shirt worn by Mrs. Yost for a day: “We Won! Boys Rule!” or “We Won! Girls Rule!”
Once teachers return after the winter break they will be given $30 each to spend on something they need for their class (this is using the remainder of the money we earned last year from our contests in 2010-11). Keep watching as we report what supplies or rewards the teachers purchase for their students. Your children get the reward from all your hard work cutting and collecting Box Tops and Labels! Thanks for your amazing support! Let the battle begin!
How are we doing overall? From last year's rankings we are #9 in the state of Utah. A local charter school from our neighborhood is #1. (They earned $1800 more than we did. That means they collected 18,000 more Box Tops than our school.) We are so close to being the first in the state for earning Box Top money! Did you know that there are other ways to earn boxtops? If you visit the website you can enter contests, watch videos and fill out surveys, or do your online shopping through their links. These are all great ways to earn bonus boxtops for our school.

You Can Make a Difference on the PTA 2012 Board
YOU Make a Difference! Be Part of your Child’s School Experience
The Foothills PTA needs your help! We are looking for volunteers for PTA board for the 2012-2013 year.
PTA puts on programs at our school like: Reflections, Red Ribbon Week, Student Recognition, Field Day, Book Fair and the PTA Newsletter and Website. The PTA Fun Run also pays for field trips and assemblies. It doesn’t take any special skills or a lot of time. It only takes the desire to be part of your child’s school experience.
You may think that you don’t need to get involved because there are so many other parents helping. But that isn’t true. The PTA board has only a small handful of parents who take an active roll in the PTA and its programs.
What's In it for You?

• Provide resources and education on child and family related issues.

"The Hundred Dresses" Donations Distributed to Girls in Need in Salt Lake
Dear Friends of Young Company, Thank you so much for your help with our dress drive this year. I wanted to let you know that with your help we collected about 1800 dresses! Canyon Rim Academy won the contest with 308 dresses collected and we were overwhelmed with the support and enthusiasm of all the schools that participated in the drive. Certificates signed by the cast will be coming soon to all participating schools. The dresses were donated to two charities: Women of the World and Centro Hispano, as well as several local elementary schools. Greenwood Elementary, a Title One school in American Fork was one of the recipients of your efforts. We received about 400 dresses and were able to place all but two of the dresses in only two days! We are so grateful for your efforts on our behalf. So many of the families in our community really needed something just for them at Christmas time. It was a much welcome gift. Although you collected the dresses and organized them you did not have the blessing of watching them being distributed to our girls. I wanted to share just a few heartfelt stories that helped to really bring the spirit of Christmas home to me. Each one of the girls in our school had the opportunity to try on and pick out their own dress. So many smiles and exclamations of joy were heard throughout the day. The younger girls would try on a dress then twirl around like a princess and refuse to take the dress off again. I saw many dresses at the annual Christmas sing, the choir concert and worn just over their regular clothes. The girls were very excited. Parents had the opportunity to come to the school throughout the day to help their girls pick out dresses and get dresses for little ones not yet in school. There were so many families in need. One grandmother had tears running down her face because she was so grateful that now she would have something to put under the Christmas tree for her granddaughters. She expressed her heartfelt thanks many times blessing those who were able to provide such beautiful things for others. Many young mothers were able to get something for for their infants and shared many hugs as they expressed their gratitude. Others came asking for dresses for neighbors they knew were in need. The PTA volunteers heard many families saying thank you along with the girls as they came down with their classes. It was amazing to me that there was not a single time when a disagreement broke out because more than one girl wanted a dress. Everyone was able to find their own beautiful style just for them. Thank you again for giving this opportunity to our school. We very much appreciate the time and effort you put into making this possible for our girls. What's Happening in Your Grade in December?
KINDERGARTEN No report
Season's greetings from FIRST GRADE! This month we will be learning about many different holiday traditions from around the world. We will sample different foods, play games, learn dances, and gain a better appreciation for other cultures. We will be learning map skills as well. If you have lived in or traveled to another country and would be willing to share your experiences with us, please let your child's teacher know as soon as possible. Thank you for all your help and support this year! We hope each family has a wonderful holiday season!
During the month of December, SECOND GRADERS will be telling time using analog clocks and studying linear patterns that repeat. They will also be studying about winter holidays around the world. Talk to you child about the traditions you had as a child and those you have continued in your family.
Have a great break "B Track," welcome back "C Track." The THIRD GRADE team is thankful for their students. Our field trip to the ballet was very educational. We are also thrilled to have some students involved in Science Fair this year. Many teachers are doing projects that help benefit the community. Miss Gilan's class is making scarves to donate to the rescue mission. We wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday Season!

The FIFTH GRADE has been working on writing good paragraphs and perfecting our multiplication skills. Most of us are studying the Revolutionary War in Social Studies and learning about magnets and electricity in Science. Our teachers attended a professional development class to help us teach the new Language Arts Common Core and are confident our students will do fabulous with it! Please help us by reading at least 20 minutes a night and being prepared for all assignments.
SIXTH GRADE is full of excitement, energy, anticipation... and yes... some anxiety. The new math common core has us hopping! We love it and are determined (character trait of the month) to understand and conquer it! We're doing lots of reading, writing, and arithmetic. In Science and Social Studies, we're learning about the universe, both on the earth and above it, and all it's aspects! Square Dancing on Friday mornings keeps us limber as a licorice stick. We have a Mustang Market on Dec. 2 where the kids learn and practice economic strategies. Our Digital Dance is schedule for Friday Dec. 16. Whew... December is busy! Happy Holidays to all!
